Applying AI Vision to a Sea Patrol Challenge

A school's request for coding enrichment became an applied learning experience where students explored how AI vision could be used to respond to a challenge connected to their NCC (Sea) context.

THE OBJECTIVE

Moving beyond coding for coding's sake

Create a coding enrichment experience that gave students wider exposure to technology while remaining relevant and engaging for an NCC (Sea) cohort.

OUR RESPONSE

Technology anchored in a meaningful challenge

Explorer Junior reframed the brief around a sea patrol scenario, giving students a reason to explore how AI vision and physical computing can help a system sense information and respond to the world around it.

Instead of encountering AI as an abstract concept, students explored it through a challenge connected to a context they already understood.

FROM CONCEPT TO APPLICATION

What could AI actually do here?

Students were not introduced to AI simply as another technology to learn. The sea patrol context gave them a practical question: what information would a system need to recognise, and what should happen next?

This shifted the learning from following code towards thinking about how technology interprets information, makes programmed decisions and produces an action.

The result was an introduction to AI grounded in problem-solving and human decision-making, rather than technology for its own sake.
